War and Natural Gas: The Israeli Invasion and Gaza's Offshore Gas Fields

"The military invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israeli Forces bears a direct relation to the control and ownership of strategic offshore gas reserves.
This is a war of conquest. Discovered in 2000, there are extensive gas reserves off the Gaza coastline.
British Gas (BG Group) and its partner, the Athens based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC) owned by Lebanon's Sabbagh and Koury families, were granted oil and gas exploration rights in a 25 year agreement signed in November 1999 with the Palestinian Authority.
The rights to the offshore gas field are respectively British Gas (60 percent); Consolidated Contractors (CCC) (30 percent); and the Investment Fund of the Palestinian Authority (10 percent). (Haaretz, October 21, 2007).

The PA-BG-CCC agreement includes field development and the construction of a gas pipeline.(Middle East Economic Digest, Jan 5, 2001).
The BG licence covers the entire Gazan offshore marine area, which is contiguous to several Israeli offshore gas facilities. (See Map below). It should be noted that 60 percent of the gas reserves along the Gaza-Israel coastline belong to Palestine.
The BG Group drilled two wells in 2000: Gaza Marine-1 and Gaza Marine-2. Reserves are estimated by British Gas to be of the order of 1.4 trillion cubic feet, valued at approximately 4 billion dollars. These are the figures made public by British Gas. The size of Palestine's gas reserves could be much larger.
Who Owns the Gas Fields
The issue of sovereignty over Gaza's gas fields is crucial. From a legal standpoint, the gas reserves belong to Palestine.
The death of Yasser Arafat, the election of the Hamas government and the ruin of the Palestinian Authority have enabled Israel to establish de facto control over Gaza's offshore gas reserves.
British Gas (BG Group) has been dealing with the Tel Aviv government. In turn, the Hamas government has been bypassed in regards to exploration and development rights over the gas fields.
The election of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2001 was a major turning point. Palestine's sovereignty over the offshore gas fields was challenged in the Israeli Supreme Court. Sharon stated unequivocally that "Israel would never buy gas from Palestine" intimating that Gaza's offshore gas reserves belong to Israel.
In 2003, Ariel Sharon, vetoed an initial deal, which would allow British Gas to supply Israel with natural gas from Gaza's offshore wells. (The Independent, August 19, 2003)
The election victory of Hamas in 2006 was conducive to the demise of the Palestinian Authority, which became confined to the West Bank, under the proxy regime of Mahmoud Abbas.
In 2006, British Gas "was close to signing a deal to pump the gas to Egypt." (Times, May, 23, 2007). According to reports, British Prime Minister Tony Blair intervened on behalf of Israel with a view to shunting the agreement with Egypt.
The following year, in May 2007, the Israeli Cabinet approved a proposal by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert "to buy gas from the Palestinian Authority." The proposed contract was for $4 billion, with profits of the order of $2 billion of which one billion was to go the Palestinians.
Tel Aviv, however, had no intention on sharing the revenues with Palestine. An Israeli team of negotiators was set up by the Israeli Cabinet to thrash out a deal with the BG Group, bypassing both the Hamas government and the Palestinian Authority:
"Israeli defence authorities want the Palestinians to be paid in goods and services and insist that no money go to the Hamas-controlled Government." (Ibid, emphasis added)
The objective was essentially to nullify the contract signed in 1999 between the BG Group and the Palestinian Authority under Yasser Arafat.
Under the proposed 2007 agreement with BG, Palestinian gas from Gaza's offshore wells was to be channeled by an undersea pipeline to the Israeli seaport of Ashkelon, thereby transferring control over the sale of the natural gas to Israel.
The deal fell through. The negotiations were suspended:
"Mossad Chief Meir Dagan opposed the transaction on security grounds, that the proceeds would fund terror". (Member of Knesset Gilad Erdan, Address to the Knesset on "The Intention of Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to Purchase Gas from the Palestinians When Payment Will Serve Hamas," March 1, 2006, quoted in Lt. Gen. (ret.) Moshe Yaalon, Does the Prospective Purchase of British Gas from Gaza's Coastal Waters Threaten Israel's National Security? Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, October 2007)
Israel's intent was to foreclose the possibility that royalties be paid to the Palestinians. In December 2007, The BG Group withdrew from the negotiations with Israel and in January 2008 they closed their office in Israel.(BG website).
Invasion Plan on The Drawing Board
The invasion plan of the Gaza Strip under "Operation Cast Lead" was set in motion in June 2008, according to Israeli military sources:
"Sources in the defense establishment said Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed the Israel Defense Forces to prepare for the operation over six months ago [June or before June] , even as Israel was beginning to negotiate a ceasefire agreement with Hamas."(Barak Ravid, Operation "Cast Lead": Israeli Air Force strike followed months of planning, Haaretz, December 27, 2008)
That very same month, the Israeli authorities contacted British Gas, with a view to resuming crucial negotiations pertaining to the purchase of Gaza's natural gas:
"Both Ministry of Finance director general Yarom Ariav and Ministry of National Infrastructures director general Hezi Kugler agreed to inform BG of Israel's wish to renew the talks.
The sources added that BG has not yet officially responded to Israel's request, but that company executives would probably come to Israel in a few weeks to hold talks with government officials." (Globes online- Israel's Business Arena, June 23, 2008)
The decision to speed up negotiations with British Gas (BG Group) coincided, chronologically, with the planning of the invasion of Gaza initiated in June. It would appear that Israel was anxious to reach an agreement with the BG Group prior to the invasion, which was already in an advanced planning stage.
Moreover, these negotiations with British Gas were conducted by the Ehud Olmert government with the knowledge that a military invasion was on the drawing board. In all likelihood, a new "post war" political-territorial arrangement for the Gaza strip was also being contemplated by the Israeli government.
In fact, negotiations between British Gas and Israeli officials were ongoing in October 2008, 2-3 months prior to the commencement of the bombings on December 27th.
In November 2008, the Israeli Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of National Infrastructures instructed Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) to enter into negotiations with British Gas, on the purchase of natural gas from the BG's offshore concession in Gaza. (Globes, November 13, 2008)
"Ministry of Finance director general Yarom Ariav and Ministry of National Infrastructures director general Hezi Kugler wrote to IEC CEO Amos Lasker recently, informing him of the government's decision to allow negotiations to go forward, in line with the framework proposal it approved earlier this year.
The IEC board, headed by chairman Moti Friedman, approved the principles of the framework proposal a few weeks ago. The talks with BG Group will begin once the board approves the exemption from a tender." (Globes Nov. 13, 2008)
Gaza and Energy Geopolitics
The military occupation of Gaza is intent upon transferring the sovereignty of the gas fields to Israel in violation of international law.
What can we expect in the wake of the invasion? What is the intent of Israel with regard to Palestine's Natural Gas reserves?
A new territorial arrangement, with the stationing of Israeli and/or "peacekeeping" troops?
The militarization of the entire Gaza coastline, which is strategic for Israel?
The outright confiscation of Palestinian gas fields and the unilateral declaration of Israeli sovereignty over Gaza's maritime areas?
If this were to occur, the Gaza gas fields would be integrated into Israel's offshore installations, which are contiguous to those of the Gaza Strip. (See Map 1 above).
These various offshore installations are also linked up to Israel's energy transport corridor, extending from the port of Eilat, which is an oil pipeline terminal, on the Red Sea to the seaport - pipeline terminal at Ashkelon, and northwards to Haifa, and eventually linking up through a proposed Israeli-Turkish pipeline with the Turkish port of Ceyhan.
Ceyhan is the terminal of the Baku, Tblisi Ceyhan Trans Caspian pipeline. "What is envisaged is to link the BTC pipeline to the Trans-Israel Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline, also known as Israel's Tipline." Publication of Disputed Holocaust Memoir Canceled
NEW YORK — The publisher of a disputed Holocaust memoir has canceled the book, adding the name Herman Rosenblat to an increasingly long line of literary fakers and ending with a heartbreaking crash his story — embraced by Oprah Winfrey among others — of meeting his future wife at a Nazi concentration camp.
"I wanted to bring happiness to people," Rosenblat said in a statement issued Saturday through his agent, Andrea Hurst. "I brought hope to a lot of people. My motivation was to make good in this world."...
Rosenblat's "Angel at the Fence" had been scheduled to come out in February, but Berkley Books, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), withdrew the memoir following allegations by scholars, friends and family members that his tale was untrue.
"Berkley Books is canceling publication of `Angel at the Fence' after receiving new information from Herman Rosenblat's agent, Andrea Hurst," the publisher said in a statement. "Berkley will demand that the author and the agent return all money that they have received for this work."
A couple of days earlier, Berkley had offered a qualified defense of the book, saying it was a work of memory, a story whose truth was known only to the author.

Encounter with a history teacher

I had a testy but fun little encounter with a blowhard history teacher from North Penn High School while waiting in line to vote Tuesday. The radio said there would be a long wait - and there was. So I brought a book. This one:

Churchhill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War.

From the chat surrounding me in line, I knew I was surrounded by folks who, though not all teachers, make their living from the public schools (which in the past would make them automatically Democrats). Two of them were really nice but one guy was pompus and not able to say so much a "good morning" without there being an agenda behind it. Naturally he turns out to be a public school history teacher. Dedicating his life to teaching our children who to love and who to hate. Finally, just before it was time to check in and vote, he spoke to me; "That's an interesting book".

"Thanks," I responded, "Been sitting on my desk for 2 months. Don't have much free time anymore and finally catching up on my reading. I'm enjoying it."

He interrupted to get to his point; "Don't know how you could have avoided it (referring to WW2), assassinate him maybe?"

Still friendly I said, "Well some of us think that America fights too many wars and maybe it's time to think outside the box. What makes us the world's policeman? What gives us the right to decide how other nations live and enfore it by a war?"

Here his public-school-think, with its shallow stereotyping comes in. To him people are either Democrats or Republicans. Republicans are war-mongers, and Democrats fight only heroic, "good" struggles. And yet the truth is different - or was once - when Republicans were republicans and believed in a healthy isolationism - before conservativism was taken over by neo-conservativism; when we believed in Christian humility and didn't think we should be the world's policeman. So he jumped in with "Yeah like Iraq?" again he's a stereotype - Iraq is a evil not because war is evil - but because Bush's wars are evil. He could not imagine someone who really thinks wars are destroying us - including his "good war."

Me; "And soon Iran"

Together; "and Afghanistan."

Me holding up the book title facing him; "Good then maybe soon you'll learn that war is the problem."

Him; "Well then maybe next time we'll just let them destroy us."

Me; "Well considering what our wars done to Western Civiliaztion that would be an ideal outcome."

This stunned him. He visibly recoiled with his mouth slightly open. I waited a well-timed moment and turned away. I'm Anglo-Saxon I hate making a scene. Fortunately I was at the head of the line and went off to vote.

Government schools teach what they goverment wants us to think. They've crafted a dialectic in which they win no matter which side you choose. The media gives us this narrow worldview as well.

Well how about this one. I support the permanent things - and nothing less. My children's blood are not for your flag, or ideology, your political movment, religion, social cause, church, "Great Satan" or anything else.

My children belong to their ancestors, their posterity, and our God whose Holy Spirit moves me. They are forever His.

They had it good; they were proud that the financial charts of the US and of the world were drawn up in a small room by Henry Paulson of the Treasury, Ben Bernanke and Alan Greenspan of the Federal Reserve, by Maurice Greenberg of A.I.G. They built their world surrounded by Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Marc Rich, Michael Milken, Andrew Fastow, George Soros, et al. Their exciting new world of Lexus and Nexus was glorified by Tom Friedman of the New York Times. They gave the Nobel Prize in Economics to Myron Scholes and Robert C. Merton, proud board directors of the now infamous Long Term Capital Management hedge fund that was bailed out by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to the tune of $3.6 billion. President Bush rewarded them for their unaccountability by releasing them from the burden of taxation. Let them pay now for all the fun they had.

The Americans are entitled to know who robbed them and their children: these are the men who became so ostentatiously rich during last two decades. They should pay the price of their crime. And if the government, the President, the Congress and Senate, the Democrats and the Republicans are reluctant to enforce it, the ordinary Americans may do as their Connecticut Yankee ancestors did: apply tar and feathers liberally. Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac - Big Success Stories!

I think it's time to stop letting the media write our script. Most American's got screwed by the Fannie/Freddie bailout because that's the way it was designed. And it succeeded big time.

Fannie/Freddie were Democrat Party programs designed to transfer wealth from largely Republican constituencies (middle class working folks) to Democrat constituencies (poor, welfare recipients, and a few rich uber-capitalists).

This YouTube video of Fannie Mae CEO, Daniel Mudd, addressing the Congressional Black Caucus, including Barack Obama, at their swearing-in ceremony in 2005 has been flying around the Internet - but of course is never mentioned on ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBC.

It is sickening.

The sidelining of Carter was driven by recognition in the Obama camp and among Democratic leaders that giving the former president a prominent convention spot might alienate Jewish voters.

Among some of Jewish delegates to the convention, however, denying Carter a speech but offering him a video tribute was not nearly sanction enough.

“He hasn’t shown respect to Israel and many of the Jewish constituencies here based on the things he has done,” said Nan Rich, a Florida state senator who left the hall in protest before Carter’s appearance onstage.

Although staunch critics of Carter may not have been won over by the Obama campaign’s sidelining of the former president, at least one one Jewish Democratic official says the episode reflects the degree to which the presidential hopeful is concerned about shoring up Jewish support before November.

“I think it’s hard to ask a political party to take a former president and say, ‘We’re not going to hear you at all,’” said Ira Forman, executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council. “The party is very sensitive to the American Jewish community, and it’s very sensitive to ever conveying that this is anything but a pro-Israel party.”

And though Rich chose to protest Carter’s inclusion, she was among the critics who appreciated the decision to minimize his role.

“It shows the party gets it and Barack Obama’s campaign gets it,” she said."

After the collapse of communism, Russia reconciled itself to the “loss” of 14 former Soviet republics, which became states in their own right, even though some 25m Russians were left stranded in countries no longer their own. Some of those nations were unable to treat their own minorities with the respect they deserved. Georgia immediately stripped its “autonomous regions” of Abkhazia and South Ossetia of their autonomy.

How would America feel if the Soviet Union formed a close alliance with Cuba - sending arms to her and trying to ally her with the Eastern republics.

The 2001 Anthrax powder-by-mail attacks were a famous and very unsettling crime against the American people. Coming as it did just after the 2001 World Trade Center terrorism it had a unsettling effect on the American psyche.

From Fox News - "Five people died and 17 others were sickened when anthrax-laced letters began showing up at congressional offices, newsrooms and post offices soon after Sept. 11, 2001." Among the targets were major news media offices and the Congressional Office building.

In 2003, a government scientist named Steven Hatfill was named as a "person of interest" in the crime. This came from Bush Justice Department chairman John Ashcroft who actually only called Hatfill a "person of interest." But the media turned him into the suspect. Why?

Well for one thing the Anti-Defamation League tipped off the FBI to Steven Hatfill - primarily because they didn't like conservatives and Steven Hatfill was a conservative. The media hoped Hatfill was guilty and did they could to make it true.

But the real guilty party - Dr. Bruce Edward Ivins appears to have been a staunch Zionist and would be considered bigoted if his nationalism were on behalf of any other ethnicity. In 1991, Dr. Ivins wrote this to the FrederickNewsPost.com in his hometown of Frederick ,MD.

"California's recognition of same-sex marriages went into effect June 17, and the newswires quickly filled with images of happy couples exchanging rings, being showered with rice, and blushing. But the celebrations cannot conceal the legal difficulties that lie ahead for religious groups that do not recognize these unions.

Confronted with a choice between Church teaching and Massachusetts state law, which also recognizes same-sex marriages, Catholic Charities, an organization that only places children with heterosexual couples, had to close its adoption agencies in the state. In New Jersey, a Methodist ministry that rented out facilities for wedding receptions lost its tax-exempt status for refusing to make the space available for same-sex commitment ceremonies.

Legal recognition of gay unions comes at a steep price for Christian institutions, which have now lost a degree of freedom. If states do not provide religious exemptions to these laws, same-sex marriage will begin pushing faith-based organizations out of the public square. This means the loss not only of a few reception halls and adoption agencies, but many religiously-affiliated hospitals and schools.

In a nation so committed to allowing its citizens to define their own lives, a little tolerance ought also to be extended to these long established and socially vital institutions. "

Essentially - Christian institutions are being forced to violate the tenants of their faith (such coersion is not being visited upon Jewish institutions) or else be forced to pay money to the government.

American political scientist and fierce critic of Israel, Prof. Norman Finkelstein, was denied entry to Israel and deported from the country early Saturday morning. Officials said that the decision to deport Finkelstein was connected to his anti-Zionist opinions and fierce public criticism of Israel around the world.

Finkelstein landed at Ben-Gurion International Airport at 2 a.m. Friday morning and was immediately taken for questioning by the Immigration Authority and the Interior Ministry. He arrived in Israel from Europe, where he was on a speaking tour. According to his Web site, his last talk was at the University of Amsterdam.

His lawyer, Michael Sfarad, said he was interrogated for several hours and told that he would not be allowed into the country on security grounds. He was held overnight and forced to board a flight to Europe early Saturday morning.

Finkelstein reportedly said that Israel uses the Holocaust as an excuse for the fight against anti-Semitism and has managed to trick Germany into paying exorbitant sums of money in compensation. He also called Holocaust survivor and scholar Eli Wiesel a "clown prince."

Prof. Alan Dershowitz of Harvard was active in campaigning against Finkelstein. His most recent book, Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History, is largely an attack on Dershowitz's The Case for Israel. In his book, Finkelstein argues that Israel uses the outcry over perceived anti-Semitism as a weapon to stifle criticism.

Steve Thomas Rooney faces 13 felony sex-related counts, including charges that he had unlawful sex with two female students, ages 13 and 14, during the time he was an assistant principal at a middle school. And here's the kicker: In August 2007 LAUSD assigned Rooney to his job even though it knew that police had investigated him about an alleged sexual relationship with a student at his previous job at a high school. The former high school girl has since testified that Rooney impregnated her. (LAT coverage)
KNX 1070 Newsradio has reported "21 teachers and administrators have been yanked from schools in the past year because of allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with kids." Most of the cases happened since only January of this year.

When it comes to the abuse of children, it sure seems like the national media doesn't get too worked up unless the words "Cardinal," "bishop," or "priest" is in someone's job title.

Imagine the media uproar if a Cardinal or bishop had dismissively responded, "These things happen," when asked about child sexual abuse in his organization. You can also bet that if it were the Catholic Church, the media would be angrily demanding the names and locations of those 21 teachers and administrators.

Completely un-noted in the main-stream media is that the biggest immigration raid in history happened this week. Furthermore - since the owners of the business were Orthodox Jews it was a politically risky operation for the Bush Administration. "WEST DES MOINES — A federal immigration raid at a kosher meatpacking plant in northeast Iowa was the largest such operation in U.S. history, with nearly 400 people arrested, federal officials said Tuesday.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said at least 390 people were arrested on immigration charges as part of a raid Monday morning at Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville. The plant had about 900 workers before the raid.
Most of the 314 men and 76 women arrested are from Guatemala and Mexico, but some were from Ukraine and Israel.
"Based on the number of ... arrests, this is the largest single site operation of its kind ever in the United States," said ICE spokesman Tim Counts.
The raid followed a months-long investigation into Agriprocessors, the largest kosher slaughterhouse in the world.
ICE officials would not comment on whether company officials could face criminal charges. Telephone messages left with Agriprocessors on Tuesday were not returned.

The world is witnessing a terrible human rights crime in Gaza, where amillion and a half human beings are being imprisoned with almost no access to the outside world by sea, air, or land. An entire populationis being brutally punished.

This gross mistreatment of the Palestinians in Gaza was escalateddramatically by Israel, with United States backing, after political candidates representing Hamas won a majority of seats in thePalestinian Authority parliament in 2006. The election was unanimously judged to be honest and fair by all international observers.

Israel and the US refused to accept the right of Palestinians to form a unity government with Hamas and Fatah and now, after internal strife, Hamas alone controls Gaza. Forty-one of the 43 victorious Hamas candidates who lived in the West Bank are now imprisoned by Israel, plus an additional ten who assumed positions in the short-lived coalition cabinet.

Israeli bombs and missiles periodically strike the encapsulated area, causing high casualties among both militants and innocent women and children. Prior to the highly publicized killing of a woman and her four little children last week, this pattern was illustrated by a previous report from B'Tselem, the leading Israeli human rights organization: 106 Palestinians were killed between February 27 and March 3. Fifty-four of them were civilians who didn't take part in the fighting, and 25 were under 18 years of age.

A university has withdrawn a researcher’s fellowship after he published an article claiming that the gas chambers of Auschwitz never existed.

Nicholas Kollerstrom, an academic specialising in astronomy, posted the article, The Auschwitz “Gas Chamber” Illusion, on the website of the revisionist Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust.

He claimed that only one million Jews died in the war and that “the only intentional mass extermination program[me] in the concentration camps of WW2 was targeted at Germans”.

Dr Kollerstrom, 61, an honorary research fellow at University College London until Tuesday, stood by the claims this week, but expressed surprise that they had caused offence.

And he insisted the university “had not actually told me what’s so terrible about the article”.

He complained that he had beenaccused of "thought-crime" after spending months researching it.And he added: "If a smaller number were gassed, then surely the Jewish community should be pleased that it wasn't so ghastly."

The Southern Poverty Law Center is leading an all-out assault against sociology professor Kevin MacDonald. His crime? He writes about the delicate issues surrounding Jewish separatism in a multi-cultural society. In as much as his field is sociology it seems like an interesting and highly-relevant area of research today. But to the SPLC he is guilty of (yep, you guessed it) "hate." Hate of course is the thought crime the identities of the Left (blacks, gays, Jews) use to silence anyone who disagrees with them.

I have read Professor MacDonald's book The Culture of Critique and found it brilliant and exciting - exciting simply because he says things that are not generally allowed to be said - but obviously true or at least sensible.

The pressure on CSULB from wealthy Jewish and "civil-rights" groups is now enormous. They are right now holding the line on academic freedom but it is by no means certain they will be able to continue resisting.

Ron Paul Stands Alone Against Gaza Bill (404-1)

What courage! God bless Ron Paul.

On Wednesday, March 5, the House passed H.R. 951, which condemns the ongoing Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli civilians, holding both Iran and Syria responsible for "sponsoring terror attacks." Additionally, the resolution claims that "those responsible for launching rocket attacks against Israel routinely embed their production facilities and launch sites amongst the Palestinian civilian population, utilizing them as human shields". This resolution problematically includes a strong defense of the recent Israeli incursions in Gaza.

The resolution passed the House with an unequivocal majority of 404 to 1 with four representatives voting present and nineteen abstaining. Who was the lone Member of Congress to stand up to the Israel Lobby? Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) not only voted against HR 951, but also made a very strong statement explaining why he opposed such a biased pro-Israel statement.

Below is Rep. Paul's statement he gave to the House before the vote:

"Mr. Speaker I rise in opposition to H. Res. 951, a resolution to condemn Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli civilians. As one who is consistently against war and violence, I obviously do not support the firing of rockets indiscriminately into civilian populations. I believe it is appalling that Palestinians are firing rockets that harm innocent Israelis, just as I believe it is appalling that Israel fires missiles into Palestinian areas where children and other non-combatants are killed and injured.

Unfortunately, legislation such as this is more likely to perpetuate violence in the Middle East than contribute to its abatement. It is our continued involvement and intervention - particularly when it appears to be one-sided - that reduces the incentive for opposing sides to reach a lasting peace agreement.

Additionally, this bill will continue the march toward war with Iran and Syria, as it contains provocative language targeting these countries. The legislation oversimplifies the Israel/Palestine conflict and the larger unrest in the Middle East by simply pointing the finger at Iran and Syria. This is another piece in a steady series of legislation passed in the House that intensifies enmity between the United States and Iran and Syria. My colleagues will recall that we saw a similar steady stream of provocative legislation against Iraq in the years before the US attack on that country.

I strongly believe that we must cease making proclamations involving conflicts that have nothing to do with the United States. We incur the wrath of those who feel slighted while doing very little to slow or stop the violence."

The American Conservative's Steve Sailer writes brilliantly about some demographic data that must be known by most political pundits but is rarely mentioned - for obvious reasons. It has the effect of highlighting racial truth behind the constituencies served by the Democrats and those of the Republicans.

A study of census data by the New York Times found that “Manhattan’s 35,000 or so white non-Hispanic toddlers are being raised by parents whose median income was $284,208 a year in 2005.” Second was San Francisco, where the 50th percentile of income for white parents of small children fell at $150,763. That explains a lot about why the city by the bay is last in the country in percentage of residents under 18, below even retirement havens such as Palm Beach.

The culture wars between Red and Blue States are driven in large part by these objective differences in how family-friendly they are, financially speaking. "

"Consequently, I devised a measure called “Years Married” (modeled on Total Fertility) that estimated how many years a woman could expect to be married during her childbearing years of 18-44.

For example, white women in Utah lead the nation by being married an average of 17.0 years during those 27 years from age 18 through 44. In contrast, in liberal Washington D.C., the average white woman is married only 7.4 years. In Massachusetts, where Bush won merely 37 percent, years married average just 12.2.

Catholic University abruptly canceled an 11-part lecture series, "Building Catholic Communities," on Monday, after the Southern Poverty Law Center complained that two of the scheduled lecturers are anti-Semites.

The university released a statement yesterday saying the lecturers "appear to espouse views that are contrary to the mission and values of Catholic University. In light of this development, the dean of the school decided to cancel the lecture series," referring to Randall Ott, dean of Catholic's school of architecture.

Mark Potok, director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, called the school to complain about the participation of E. Michael Jones, editor of the South Bend, Ind.-based Culture Wars magazine, and John Sharpe, founder of the Norfolk-based IHS Press and the Legion of St. Louis, an Internet-based forum.

"We were surprised that Catholic University was allowing two raging anti-Semites on their campus," said Mr. Potok. "A simple Google search will show you the frightening ideology of these men."

Said Michael Jones, "We were Catholics talking to other Catholics about community. The SPLC has veto power over what Catholics say to each other, all because of the cowards at Catholic University. Don't you think they owed me the courtesy of at least calling me up? Wasn't there any due process here?""

"The reports were true: The Pope has changed the traditional Good Friday prayer for the conversion of the Jews. But, amazingly enough, the change is another positive development in this papacy, although I would never have thought so until I actually read the text of the new prayer.

First of all, there is only one thing we need to know about the revised prayer in order to assess whether it is good or bad for the cause of the Gospel: Abe Foxman hates it. He really hates it.

Foxman and his collaborators did not get what they were clamoring for: a formal abandonment of the necessity of Jewish conversion to Christ. What they got instead is a reformulation of the Good Friday prayer that takes away their issue while petitioning for Jewish conversion in a way that is, if anything, even more objectionable from their standpoint. Here is the prayer as it reads in an unofficial (but apparently quite accurate) translation:

Let us pray also for the Jews.

May our God and Lord enlighten their hearts, so that they may acknowledge Jesus Christ, savior of all men.

Let us pray.
Let us kneel.
Arise.

Almighty and everlasting God, who desires that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of truth, mercifully grant that, as the fullness of the Gentiles enters into Thy Church, all Israel may be saved. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen. (all emphasis mine)"

Dancing with Sprites agrees with the prayer - and frankly doesn't understand Abraham Foxman's objections to it. We have different religions - why should we all think alike? Why is it OK for him to demand we change for his religion - but not OK for us to pray for their conversion?

It is astonishing how successful these 10 politicans are. Now Dancing With Sprites is cynical - and understands that Judicial Watch may have selected well-known political figures so as to enhance their own reputation - still there has to be at least some truth to these ratings.

"(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released its 2007 list of Washington’s “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians.” The list, in alphabetical order, includes:

1. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY): In addition to her long and sordid ethics record, Senator Hillary Clinton took a lot of heat in 2007 – and rightly so – for blocking the release her official White House records. Many suspect these records contain a treasure trove of information related to her role in a number of serious Clinton-era scandals. Moreover, in March 2007, Judicial Watch filed an ethics complaint against Senator Clinton for filing false financial disclosure forms with the U.S. Senate (again). And Hillary’s top campaign contributor, Norman Hsu, was exposed as a felon and a fugitive from justice in 2007. Hsu pleaded guilt to one count of grand theft for defrauding investors as part of a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme.

2. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI): Conyers reportedly repeatedly violated the law and House ethics rules, forcing his staff to serve as his personal servants, babysitters, valets and campaign workers while on the government payroll. While the House Ethics Committee investigated these allegations in 2006, and substantiated a number of the accusations against Conyers, the committee blamed the staff and required additional administrative record-keeping and employee training. Judicial Watch obtained documentation in 2007 from a former Conyers staffer that sheds new light on the activities and conduct on the part of the Michigan congressman, which appear to be at a minimum inappropriate and likely unlawful. Judicial Watch called on the Attorney General in 2007 to investigate the matter.

3. Senator Larry Craig (R-ID): In one of the most shocking scandals of 2007, Senator Craig was caught by police attempting to solicit sex in a Minneapolis International Airport men’s bathroom during the summer. Senator Craig reportedly “sent signals” to a police officer in an adjacent stall that he wanted to engage in sexual activity. When the police officer showed Craig his police identification under the bathroom stall divider and pointed toward the exit, the senator reportedly exclaimed 'No!'” When asked to produce identification, Craig presented police his U.S. Senate business card and said, “What do you think of that?” The power play didn’t work. Craig was arrested, charged and entered a guilty plea. Despite enormous pressure from his Republican colleagues to resign from the Senate, Craig refused.

4. Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA): As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee's subcommittee on military construction, Feinstein reviewed military construction government contracts, some of which were ultimately awarded to URS Corporation and Perini, companies then owned by Feinstein's husband, Richard Blum. While the Pentagon ultimately awards military contracts, there is a reason for the review process. The Senate's subcommittee on Military Construction's approval carries weight. Sen. Feinstein, therefore, likely had influence over the decision making process. Senator Feinstein also attempted to undermine ethics reform in 2007, arguing in favor of a perk that allows members of Congress to book multiple airline flights and then cancel them without financial penalty. Judicial Watch’s investigation into this matter is ongoing.

5. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY): Giuliani came under fire in late 2007 after it was discovered the former New York mayor’s office “billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons…” ABC News also reported that Giuliani provided Nathan with a police vehicle and a city driver at taxpayer expense. All of this news came on the heels of the federal indictment on corruption charges of Giuliani’s former Police Chief and business partner Bernard Kerik, who pleaded guilty in 2006 to accepting a $165,000 bribe in the form of renovations to his Bronx apartment from a construction company attempting to land city contracts.

6. Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR): Governor Huckabee enjoyed a meteoric rise in the polls in December 2007, which prompted a more thorough review of his ethics record. According to The Associated Press: “[Huckabee’s] career has also been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governor’s office.” And what was Governor Huckabee’s response to these ethics allegations? Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to shut the ethics process down.

7. I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby: Libby, former Chief of Staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined $250,000 for lying and obstructing the Valerie Plame CIA leak investigation. Libby was found guilty of four felonies -- two counts of perjury, one count of making false statements to the FBI and one count of obstructing justice – all serious crimes. Unfortunately, Libby was largely let off the hook. In an appalling lack of judgment, President Bush issued “Executive Clemency” to Libby and commuted the sentence.

8. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL): A “Dishonorable Mention” last year, Senator Obama moves onto the “ten most wanted” list in 2007. In 2006, it was discovered that Obama was involved in a suspicious real estate deal with an indicted political fundraiser, Antoin “Tony” Rezko. In 2007, more reports surfaced of deeper and suspicious business and political connections It was reported that just two months after he joined the Senate, Obama purchased $50,000 worth of stock in speculative companies whose major investors were his biggest campaign contributors. One of the companies was a biotech concern that benefited from legislation Obama pushed just two weeks after the senator purchased $5,000 of the company’s shares. Obama was also nabbed conducting campaign business in his Senate office, a violation of federal law.

9. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who promised a new era of ethics enforcement in the House of Representatives, snuck a $25 million gift to her husband, Paul Pelosi, in a $15 billion Water Resources Development Act recently passed by Congress. The pet project involved renovating ports in Speaker Pelosi's home base of San Francisco. Pelosi just happens to own apartment buildings near the areas targeted for improvement, and will almost certainly experience a significant boost in property value as a result of Pelosi's earmark. Earlier in the year, Pelosi found herself in hot water for demanding access to a luxury Air Force jet to ferry the Speaker and her entourage back and forth from San Francisco non-stop, in unprecedented request which was wisely rejected by the Pentagon. And under Pelosi’s leadership, the House ethics process remains essentially shut down – which protects members in both parties from accountability.

10. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV): Over the last few years, Reid has been embroiled in a series of scandals that cast serious doubt on his credibility as a self-professed champion of government ethics, and 2007 was no different. According to The Los Angeles Times, over the last four years, Reid has used his influence in Washington to help a developer, Havey Whittemore, clear obstacles for a profitable real estate deal. As the project advanced, the Times reported, “Reid received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Whittemore.” Whittemore also hired one of Reid’s sons (Leif) as his personal lawyer and then promptly handed the junior Reid the responsibility of negotiating the real estate deal with federal officials. Leif Reid even called his father’s office to talk about how to obtain the proper EPA permits, a clear conflict of interest. "

Los Angeles - The scandal that has emerged since a Hasidic rebbe and others were charged late last month with defrauding the federal government of tax dollars has caused shock waves beyond Hasidic circles, with even Modern Orthodox rabbis addressing the issue in impassioned sermons.

The pressure was particularly great at the 900-family Modern Orthodox Beth Jacob Congregation, in Beverly Hills, where the government's chief informant in the case, Robert Kasirer, is a member. Rabbi Steven Weil delivered a sermon January 11, causing what must have been an awkward juxtaposition for many congregants: The prayer books they were using were donated by the Kasirers and emblazoned with their name. Indeed, the question of Kasirer as the FBI witness who turned state's evidence against the Hasidic rebbe in exchange for a lighter sentence on previous fraud charges stemming from his health care business seems to be weighing most heavily on people's minds, according to Los Angeles rabbis interviewed by the Forward.

In traditional Jewish law, if a Jew reports another Jew to the government, he is deemed a moser, and in some interpretations, a moser's actions are punishable by death. The issue of mesira, or informing, has prompted a round of collective soul-searching in segments of Los Angeles's Jewish community.

People are very shell-shocked about the whole thing on many levels," said Rabbi Daniel Korobkin, a West Coast representative of the Orthodox Union. "Number one, that our neighbors and friends are implicated, and number two, that an act of mesira on this level was perpetrated by one of our own."

The Huffington Post insulted American intelligence last Friday by publishing a pretzel-logic rant by one Erica Jong, titled “Who's Tired Of Pink?.”

"We are tired of the Pink Feminist Klan and their bought-and-paid for Pink Politicians (of both sexes) telling us that only women are qualified to protect women. We are tired of the Pink Klan controlling our educational systems, law, psychology, and media. We are disgusted by those who insist that worshipping the Vagina Monologues and the Pink Oedipus Complex is a good thing.

We are tired of Pink Warriors of both sexes who converted marriage from a cooperative institution into a war for domination and submission. We are disgusted by those who tell us that marriage is a trap, when we know that it normally provides a much better life for the vast majority of women than anything that the Pink Klan ever accomplished. We are saddened because so many good women bore heavy costs in their personal lives because they were fooled following the Pink Piper down a troubling path that is difficult to get out of. "

The Screwtape Letters - Lantern Theater

Took my wife to see the Screwtape Letters at the Lantern Theater last weekend. I really enjoy this show. I saw it twice when they did it before about 4 years ago. It's a hit - so they do it regularly now - every year or every other year. And Anthony Lawton (one of the few actors in Philadelphia who can actually make a living at the craft) must be making a decent living off of this show - which he created. He is a wonderful actor - beautiful, strong features.

It's a 2 person show - and the other person - Guenevive Perrier - is terrific and hot and a dancer. The show is based on the famous C. S. Lewis book about the ways the devil works on the human soul and spirit.

It is one of those pieces of writing in which almost every paragraph contains one of those - Ah-Ha's - that are illuminating, thought-provoking and make make reading fun. The same for this play.

The physical skits - dancing, fire-eating, stick-fighting that punctuate every scene are wonderful and wonderfully done.

But mainly it is the C. S. Lewis that stays with you. There is the pious Christian who knows himself a Christian and better than his friends when he hangs out with the guys on Saturday - and also knows he more sophisticated than his fellow worshippers in church on Sunday. A real win-win - for the devil.

The tendency of believers to keep their hatreds close but their charity far away. It's easy to give to starving children in Africa - and yet hate you neighbor whom you find annoying or ignore your mother who spends most nights alone just a few miles from her children who are very busy with Church activities, or soup-kitchen volunteering.

This year's run is over - so it is too late to se it. And I didn't write this earlier because very performance was sold-out anyway. But you'll have another chance to see it in a couple years - guaranteed. See it then. Well worth the effort.

PS: An F-minus to the Inquirer's reviewer Toby Zinmann who's bigoted review of this show was as misleading as she could possibly make it.

The Never Ending Assault on Christendom - Kosovo

The photo to the left is of the ruins of St. Nicolas church (19th century).

The church was burned to the ground by Kosovo Albanian rioters in March this year. The church possessed one of the most beautiful wooden iconostasis (icon screen) with valuable icons which perished in fire (see little photo down right). Since March riots, despite promises of the UN Mission and Albanian led Kosovo institutions not one of the destroyed Orthodox churches has been reconstructed.

Dancing With Sprites believes that the devil does his best work when people are not looking. The American media has studiously avoided looking at Kosovo - since as far as the New York Times is concerned the work there was done when Clinton destroyed Serbia and established a Muslim state.

In Kosovo over a hundred Christian Serb churches have been destroyed since 2004. Again their third winter since is being spent by Serbs who survived murder and rape, living in wretched little containers, freezing in winter and roasting in summer. Since March 300 mosques have been built. The Saudi flag flies there.

At the University of Pristina in exile from Albanian Muslim territory, I gave a lecture to student refugees in North Mitrovica in December 2006. The rector showed me photos of his parents’ grave vandalized by the Islamist Albanians and of his house dynamited by them.

I personally saw a forged property deed in the name of President Hasim Thaqi’s brother which the latter was using usurp rich properties owned for generations by a Serb. I also saw the authentic title to property. In Kosovo document forgery, from passports to court documents and medical certificates, are easily acquired for a price. The biggest industries in US-controlled (“NATO”) are heroin smuggling and sex slavery.

A small victory against the IRS - a Ron Paul issue

This is not the kind of thing Dancing with Sprites usually covers but it attracts my attention because it is an issue central to the agenda of a presidential candidate whom I like - Ron Paul.

A Nevada businessman who was raided by the IRS and forced to sit at gunpoint in the hot, Nevada sun was acquitted in a criminal trial. Robert Kahre paid his workers in $50 gold pieces. Now the $50 gold pieces are actually worth $800 on the gold coin market. But...well - let's let the attorneys explain it.

“If a coin says it is a $50 gold piece, and it says ‘In God We Trust,’ and the law says that it is legal tender, and it is in circulation, isn’t it reasonable for people to think that they can calculate their tax liability based on that?” Hansen asks. “If a tax accountant can’t answer that question, how can a common worker be guilty of a crime? The outcome of this case is a magnificent victory for those of us who believe that the United States of America should have an honest monetary system.”

Sounds good to me. Of course I'm prejudiced. I don't care for the Internal Revenue System. I think they are undemocratic.

“One of our biggest problems is convincing people to take help,” said Eleanor West, director of services for the Washington Hancock Community Agency, a federally chartered nonprofit group. “I tell them, ‘You worked hard all your life and paid taxes and are getting back a little of what you paid in."

This piece, by the NY Times (!) is about my people. They are my people - whether they know it or not. Self-sacrifice, and not asking for help is in their make-up. It is in their genes. That is one reasion why genes matter (you asked for a racialist perspective - here you go). Of course the pure worhip of genes is vulgar - and inaccurate like a bludgeon. Ancestor worship - as our pagan ancestors is nore accurate in mapping nature's way.

Anyway these people are mine. I'd like to help them. Are their any charities I could give to where I'd be sure the money went to them? Coiuld any charity help these people? Why not?

Inherit The Wind - a bigoted play

This comes originally from The Western Confucian and to me via The Young Fogey's A Conservative Blog For Peace -- It concerns the famous Scopes "Monkey Trial" in which John T. Scopes was convicted for teaching Darwin's theory of Evolution in Tennessee where it was illegal to do so (as teaching Holocaust revisionism would be today).

"The truth about Scopes Inherit the Wind is fiction. William Jennings Bryan wasn’t an idiot (even if he was well-intendedly off in his politics like Jim Wallis today); he was a Christian who gave the text Scopes used a chance and was horrified by its then-hip racism (remember the party chatter about ‘Nordics’ in The Great Gatsby?):

...the Progressive William Jennings Bryan, who argued in the Scopes Monkey Trial that evolution meant elevating "supposedly superior intellects," "eliminating the weak," "paralyzing the hope of reform," jeopardizing "the doctrine of brotherhood," and undermining "the sympathetic activities of a civilized society."Take modern liberalism (including neoconservatism) to its conclusion and ‘Nazi supermen are our friends’."

I want to add that Inherit the Wind is bad drama. The movie is OK because of the superlative acting of Spencer Tracy and Frederick March. But the script by Jerome Lawrence (born Jerome Schwartz) is weak and the play is bad. I've seen it. It would not have survived had it not been for the satisfaction it gives to a certain American class of intellectuals who need to hate American gentiles and find in the primitive faith of middle American protestantism the perfect target.

The play creates a town called Hillsboro full of naive middle American protestants who are enforcing their religious belief in a young Earth by prosecuting the local high school biology teacher who is teaching Darwin's theory of evolution.

My problem with the play (and I've seen it) is that it has no conflict because it portrays the town of Hillsboro as a town full of stupid, bigoted, (Christian) hicks. While the hero, Henry Drummond (an agnostic) is brilliant, kind, noble (for most sympathetic directors - handsome) and of course - right.

Drama is all about conflict. But when one side is a punching bag for the other (as the town of Hillsboro is here for Drummond, there is no conflict; there can be no drama. If this play fits your bigoted stereotypes the y0u need to look at your fellow man as a human - instead of your
inferior.

Smith also believes that if Michael Mukasey is confirmed and sworn in as Attorney General, his record suggests that he will move to have the case abandoned.

On yet another case of science being subverted to Jewish religious supremacy - a Palestinian professor of anthropology was almost denied tenure for having written, "Facts on the Ground: Archaeological Practice and Territorial Self-Fashioning in Israeli Society." Published in 2001 the book demonstrates how Israeli and Jewish anthropologists manipulate the interpretation of facts to further an origin myth about the homeland of the Jewish people.

Ms. Abu El-Haj's bid for tenure, which required approval from Columbia University, has drawn fire from Barnard alumni, who threatened to withhold their financial contributions to their alma mater if the college lent its support to her scholarship. Some scholars said Ms. Abu El-Haj should be denied tenure not because she is pro-Palestinian, but because her ideology distorts and drives her scholarship.

James Watson’s Ordeal

James Watson’s embrace of racial differences in intelligence once again shows the undiminished power of the left to control public discourse on critical issues related to diversity and multiculturalism. When Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray published The Bell Curve in 1994, it was greeted with a great sense of anticipation in some circles that at last issues related to race and IQ could be discussed openly and honestly. Finally, a book had been published by a mainstream publisher that dared to argue that not only were there racial differences in intelligence, but also that it was reasonable to suppose that these differences were partly due to inheritance.

But it never happened. One has to look long and hard to find mainstream media accounts of race differences in academic success that even propose genetic differences as a reasonable hypothesis. For example, recent state reports on school success have emphasized that economic differences do not explain the racial gap in school success. One would think that the failure of the favorite explanation of the cultural left would prompt reasonable people to at least suggest at least the possibility that genetic differences are involved. But that explanation is utterly taboo in the mainstream media.

Below the surface, however, in the labyrinths of academia, The Bell Curve has had an impact. Many new researchers are now studying general intelligence. Even the US military and much work in industrial-organizational psychology is taking the importance of “g,” the general factor of mental ability, into account. Admittedly, the topic of race differences is still highly controversial. Nonetheless, even here there are real signs of progress. For example, an entire issue of the top-drawer American Psychological Association journal Psychology, Public Policy, and Law was devoted to a review of Black-White IQ differences by J. Philippe Rushton and Arthur Jensen. Their paper (in 2005) entitled “Thirty years of research on race differences in cognitive ability” concluded that Black-White differences were between 50 and 80 percent heritable.

Most recently, Rushton and his colleagues published two studies in a paper in the July 2007 Proceedings of the Royal Society of London showing that the East Asian-European-South Asian-Colored-Black differences, mainly in South Africa, were substantially heritable.However, these positive indications have not yet percolated up into the mainstream media. Watson was in some ways an ideal person to express his views on the topic and bring this material into the light of day. At 79 years old, he has little tangible to lose. He is a world-renowned figure with the sort of stature that can only come from making one of the central discoveries of 20th-century science. He is also a biologist with a professional understanding of genetic influences on behavior. Gene/behavior linkages are a major research interest of the Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory that he led until being suspended because of his comments on African intelligence. Watson also has a deep personal interest in genetic influences on behavior because his son has schizophrenia.

Of course, the egalitarians are free to have as much of their say as they like, no matter how nonsensical. A good example is Steven Rose, an old-time warrior in the IQ wars. He not only condemns Watson for expressing his opinion, but is quite happy to see that his life has been upended, stating that “the repercussions are to be welcomed.” At least that far-left ideologue was honest enough to say he didn’t believe in free speech for scientists. Perhaps Watson deserves a long prison term in a psychiatric hospital.

It’s noteworthy that Watson has not caved in on the general point that natural selection may result in differences between human groups. He has defended himself by rejecting any implication that the entire continent of Africa is “genetically inferior” while nevertheless writing We do not yet adequately understand the way in which the different environments in the world have selected over time the genes which determine our capacity to do different things. The overwhelming desire of society today is to assume that equal powers of reason are a universal heritage of humanity. It may well be. But simply wanting this to be the case is not enough. This is not science.

Watson believes that in 10–15 years we will get “an adequate understanding for the relative importance of nature versus nurture in the achievement of important human objectives.” So is the clock ticking for the cultural left? Are we about to enter an age in which it will impossible to deny genetic differences on intelligence and we will be able to rationally discuss race differences in intelligence in the mainstream media? I think not. The cultural left has a long and largely successful history of being able to combat scientific ideas that it doesn’t like. This was the main conclusion of The Culture of Critique: The long and sorry history of Boasian anthropology, psychoanalysis, the anti-hereditarian and anti-Darwinian movements in the social sciences, and the Frankfurt School all masqueraded as science but they also wore their politics on their sleeves. Like other political movements, dissenters were simply excluded — drummed out of professional societies, publically humiliated, and relegated to the fringes of intellectual life.It’s a tradition that is alive and well in the 21st century. Watson has seen his book tour cancelled, he has been suspended from his position at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and has been subjected to outraged moralism from people who can’t hold a candle to his intellectual stature. A speech by Archbishop Desmond Tutu was canceled after local Jews expressed concern about his views on Israel.The spring visit to Minnesota's University of St. Thomas was canceled because local Jewish groups were upset by comparisons Tutu had madebetween Israel and Hitler, according to a report in City Pages, a Minneapolis alternative weekly.

University officials reportedly canceled the appearance afterconsulting with a spokesperson for the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, and with several rabbis on the faculty.The uproar apparently was linked to a speech Tutu made in Boston in2002. A news release from the Zionist Organization of America, which condemned Tutu's remarks, cited a report from Ha'aretz that quoted Tutu as saying that "Israel is like Hitler and apartheid."

Local, honest, well-reasoned reply to the media

Few of you have ever seen this honest, decent response from the district attorney of LaSalle Parish in LA where blacks are threatening to riot over the so-called Jena 6. That is becuase the news media doesn't want to tell you the truth - or even that there is another side.

"I am a small-town lawyer and prosecutor. For 16 years, it has been my job as the district attorney to review each criminal case brought to me by the police department or the sheriff, match the facts to any applicable laws and seek justice for those who have been harmed. The work is often rewarding, but not always.

I do not question the sincerity or motivation of the 10,000 or more protesters who descended on Jena last week, after riding hundreds of miles on buses. But long before reaching our town of 3,000 people, they had decided that a miscarriage of justice was taking place here. Their anger at me was summed up by a woman who said, "If you can figure out how to make a schoolyard fight into an attempted murder charge, I'm sure you can figure out how to make stringing nooses into a hate crime."

That could be a compelling statement to someone trying to motivate listeners on a radio show, but as I am a lawyer obligated to enforce the laws of my state, it does not work for me.
I cannot overemphasize how abhorrent and stupid I find the placing of the nooses on the schoolyard tree in late August 2006. If those who committed that act considered it a prank, their sense of humor is seriously distorted. It was mean-spirited and deserves the condemnation of all decent people.

But it broke no law. I searched the Louisiana criminal code for a crime that I could prosecute. There is none.

Similarly, the United States attorney for the Western District of Louisiana, who is African-American, found no federal law against what was done.

A district attorney cannot take people to trial for acts not covered in the statutes. Imagine the trampling of individual rights that would occur if prosecutors were allowed to pursue every person whose behavior they disapproved of.

The "hate crime" the protesters wish me to prosecute does not exist as a stand-alone offense in Louisiana law. It's not that our Legislature has turned a blind eye to crimes motivated by race or other personal characteristics, but it has addressed the problem in a way that does not cover what happened in Jena. The hate crime statute is used to enhance the sentences of defendants found guilty of specific crimes, like murder or rape, who chose their victims based on race, religion, sexual orientation or other factors.

Last week, a reporter asked me whether, if I had it to do over, I would do anything differently. I didn't think of it at the time, but the answer is yes. I would have done a better job of explaining that the offenses of Dec. 4, 2006, did not stem from a "schoolyard fight" as it has been commonly described in the news media and by critics.

Conjure the image of schoolboys fighting: they exchange words, clench fists, throw punches, wrestle in the dirt until classmates or teachers pull them apart. Of course that would not be aggravated second-degree battery, which is what the attackers are now charged with. (Five of the defendants were originally charged with attempted second-degree murder.) But that's not what happened at Jena High School.

The victim in this crime, who has been all but forgotten amid the focus on the defendants, was a young man named Justin Barker, who was not involved in the nooses incident three months earlier. According to all the credible evidence I am aware of, after lunch, he walked to his next class. As he passed through the gymnasium door to the outside, he was blindsided and knocked unconscious by a vicious blow to the head thrown by Mychal Bell. While lying on the ground unaware of what was happening to him, he was brutally kicked by at least six people.

Imagine you were walking down a city street, and someone leapt from behind a tree and hit you so hard that you fell to the sidewalk unconscious. Would you later describe that as a fight?

Only the intervention of an uninvolved student protected Mr. Barker from severe injury or death. There was serious bodily harm inflicted with a dangerous weapon — the definition of aggravated second-degree battery. Mr. Bell's conviction on that charge as an adult has been overturned, but I considered adult status appropriate because of his role as the instigator of the attack, the seriousness of the charge and his prior criminal record.

I can understand the emotions generated by the juxtaposition of the noose incident with the attack on Mr. Barker and the outcomes for the perpetrators of each. In the final analysis, though, I am bound to enforce the laws of Louisiana as they exist today, not as they might in someone's vision of a perfect world.

That is what I have done. And that is what I must continue to do. "

America is about to enter a presidential election year. Although the outcome is of course impossible to predict at this stage, certain features of the campaign are easy to foresee. The candidates will inevitably differ on various domestic issues-health care, abortion, gay marriage, taxes, education, immigration — and spirited debates are certain to erupt on a host of foreign policy questions as well. What course of action should the United States pursue in Iraq? What is the best response to the crisis in Darfur, Iran's nuclear ambitions, Russia's hostility to NATO, and China's rising power? How should the United States address global warming, combat terrorism, and reverse the erosion of its international image? On these and many other issues, we can confidently expect lively disagreements among the various candidates.

Yet on one subject, we can be equally confident that the candidates will speak with one voice. In 2008, as in previous election years, serious candidates for the highest office in
the land will go to considerable lengths to express their deep personal commitment to one
foreign country — Israel-as well as their determination to maintain unyielding U.S. support
for the Jewish state. Each candidate will emphasize that he or she fully appreciates the
multitude of threats facing Israel and make it clear that, if elected, the United States will
remain firmly committed to defending Israel's interests under any and all circumstances.
None of the candidates is likely to criticize Israel in any significant way or suggest that
the United States ought to pursue a more evenhanded policy in the region. Any who do
will probably fall by the wayside.

This observation is hardly a bold prediction, because presidential aspirants were already proclaiming their support for Israel in early 2007. The process began in January, when four potential candidates spoke to Israel's annual Herzliya Conference on security issues. As Joshua Mitnick reported in Jewish Week, they were "seemingly competing to see who can be most strident in defense of the Jewish State."

The vast numbers of pupils who choose to study the Nazi period in history is fuelling anti-German feeling, the Church of England said.

This undercurrent is reinforced by the large number of war films shown on television and the "drip feed" of anti-German comments in the media, a report said.

Its authors said that they had received letters from German Christians living in Britain who had experienced "shameful treatment".

"A teacher of German in a secondary school reported being repeatedly confronted with a 'Heil Hitler' and with swastikas on history books,"
said the report.

"The grandchild of another person found herself excluded, on a school trip to France, from visiting a British war cemetery 'as she was a Nazi' - this despite the fact that her grandfather came to Britain as a Jewish refugee."

It said that the role of Britain in defeating the Nazis had reinforced "a sense of moral righteousness" and inhibited "soul-searching" over our own history.

The Bishop of Croydon, the Rt Rev Nicholas Baines, said that the Church had written to the Department of Education urging schools to focus more on modern Germany.

Lithuania wants to grill leading Israeli Holocaust historian Yitzhak Arad over his alleged role in war crimes against civilians and prisoners during World War II, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

"We have despatched a request to Israeli prosecutors for legal help," prosecutor Rimvydas Valentukevicius told AFP.

"We want to send Mr Arad a notice on our suspicions and to interrogate him in the framework of a preliminary probe on his possible participation in crimes against humanity in Lithuania during the Second World War," he said.

The 81-year-old Arad, who served as the director of Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Authority for 21 years, rejected the allegations in an interview to Poland’s Rzeczpospolita newspaper.

A probe launched in May 2006 showed that Arad, who was a member of the Soviet NKVD secret service, may have been involved in the killing of Lithuanian resistance figures at the end of World War II.

Lithuanian prosecutor Valentukevicius said suspicions against Arad are based on his own memoirs and documents provided by the Lithuanian Genocide and Resistance Research Center. "We have many documents, which allow us to think that Arad participated in criminal activities," Valentukevicius said.

The plaintiffs failed to prove that the 2006 law's photo ID requirement unduly burdens the right to vote, Murphy ruled.

The fate of Georgia's much-debated photo voter ID law hung in the balance with local elections scheduled in 23 counties, including Fulton, on Sept. 18.

Murphy held hearings on the federal lawsuit late last month. The state Supreme Court this summer dismissed a similar suit filed in Fulton County Superior Court."

"In a polity in which only 17 percent of the public thinks that immigration levels should be higher and 39 percent thinks they should be lower, one would expect that at least some legal scholars who write about immigration issues would favor restriction. If so, one would be wrong. In over two decades of immersion in immigration scholarship, I have not encountered a single academic specialist on immigration law who favors reducing the number of legal immigrants admitted each year." So, Carol M. Swain, a law and political science professor at Vanderbilt, has done the academic world a service (although one it probably won't appreciate) with her new book Debating Immigration. She brings together 16 chapters from academic and think tank luminaries such as Nathan Glazer, Amitai Etzioni, Douglas S. Massey, and Steven A. Camarota, along with lively essays from journalists Peter Brimelow and Jonathan Tilove.

Swain is one of the more unusual and admirable scholars in public policy. Growing up black and poor in rural Virginia, one of twelve children, she dropped out of 9th grade and married at 16. In her mid-20s she started back to school. Eventually, she earned tenure at Princeton as an expert on how Congress operates.

Her views are difficult to categorize politically. I would say she's an advocate of black enlightened self-interest, left of center on economics, right of center on culture. For example, her 2002 book The New White Nationalism sensibly advocated depriving white nationalists such as Jared Taylor of their best issues by restricting immigration and cutting back on affirmative action, especially for immigrants and affluent blacks. Needless to say, that hasn’t happened.

That whites and blacks have a common interest on immigration is obvious from a logical standpoint. But there's not much of a market for logic. Many black leaders, such as the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton and Minister Farrakhan, have no interest in striking a deal with whites on immigration because they are not in the business of enlightened self-interest for blacks. They are, instead, entertainers, riffing endlessly and lucratively on that old crowd-pleasing tune Sticking It to the White Man. If the average white person doesn't want more immigrants, well, then, these black leaders will help bring in more just to spite whitey.
It would be nice if all the blame for this kind of dead-end political thinking rested on the shoulders of Jackson, Sharpton, and Farrakhan. Unfortunately, however, they are merely meeting their audience's demand for demagoguery.

Swain's own chapter in Debating Immigration points out the uselessness of the Congressional Black Caucus on immigration bills.

She notes that one reason for this is that quite a few black Representatives come from districts that are increasingly Hispanic.

I'd add that the weird math of the "rotten borough" syndrome is encouraging black politicians to favor the immigration that will eventually destroy them.

It works like this: Noncitizens aren't allowed to vote, but in most states they are counted in the redistricting following each Census. As Latino illegal immigrants move into black neighborhoods, the number of black-dominated districts can actually increase in the next redistricting because there will be fewer voters per district in poor areas. For instance, about twice as many votes are cast in each election in the posh Beverly Hills district of Democratic Congressman Henry Waxman as in the heavily illegal alien-populated South Central LA district still represented by black radical warhorse Maxine Waters.

Eventually, though, the illegals' children will start voting (unless the current misinterpretation of the 14th Amendment granting birthright citizenship is changed). Then the black politicians will be swept from power—après Maxine, le deluge. But in the meantime, life is good for the Congressional Black Caucus.

Debating Immigration lives up to its title, with representatives from all sides, including some perspectives I haven't seen before. For example, Swain, who became an evangelical Christian at the beginning of this decade, has included an incisive analysis from a scriptural standpoint.

Under the leadership on immigration issues of the now disgraced Roger Cardinal Mahony, the Roman Catholic Church in America has been a strong voice for more Hispanic immigration. But what about conservative Protestants? Contributor James R. Edwards offers "A Biblical Perspective on Immigration Policy" that uses quotes from both Testaments to argue that liberal Christians who push for open borders from a "brotherhood of man" stance: "(1) Fail to acknowledge the special obligation we all have toward those closest to us and to the specific communities wherein we reside; (2) Pay insufficient attention to the biblical obligation that civil authorities have to protect the people and the communities entrusted to their care."

I would add that many of the references in the Bible cited by pro-immigration Christians, such as Hebrews 13:2 "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers" are not referring to immigrants but to the ancient West Asian tradition of hospitality toward guests. The difference between guests and immigrants is that guests have their own obligations—most importantly to (sooner or later) go home.

Jonathan Tilove of Newhouse News, the finest mainstream media reporter on race and immigration, writes: "In the course of my years [since 1991] reporting about race and immigration, I have come to believe that indifference to the fate of black America, or in some quarters a passive-aggressive hostility toward African Americans, has become an animating feature of support for a liberal immigration policy and helps to explain the strange bedfellows who have made that policy unstoppable even in the face of lukewarm public support at best."

"Passive-aggressive" is right. As I've argued, immigrants are "economically cleansing" native-born blacks from the home bases of the media elite—New York City and Washington D.C. This reduces crime locally, especially in this generation before the newcomers have sons who grow up to join street gangs. Many in the national press seem to assume that the African Americans who are driven out of their cities by immigrants pushing rents up and wages down are being deported. Of course, they are just being pushed out to less fashionable cities such as Newark, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. And there the murder rates have gone up considerably since 2002 and are now four to six times as bad as New York City's.

Peter Brimelow points out in his chapter that immigration's benefit to "the economy" is surprisingly small. A larger population means the overall Gross Domestic Product is larger, but virtually of that goes to the immigrants themselves. The net benefit to native-born Americans is nugatory—and is in fact wiped out by government-mandated transfer payments, such as education and welfare, from American taxpayers to immigrants.

As Peter notes, the main effect of immigration is to shift wealth from labor to capital. Despite all the chatter in the press about immigrant entrepreneurialism, unskilled illegal immigration is unthreatening to employers precisely because poorly educated Latinos are unlikely to ever provide effective competition against their bosses. Corporations thus get both cheap workers and additional consumers, but not future rivals. From a profit maximization angle, what's not to
like?

On the other hand, the book also includes an essay with the curious title "Hispanics and Asians: America's Last Hope" by the famous Israeli-American sociologist Amitai Etzioni of George Washington University in D.C., where he is the Director of the Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies. Etzioni was a Senior Adviser to President Carter and his website lists his awards and honors at vast length.

Etzioni is best known for publicizing the word "communitarian". Wikipedia says: "The main idea of Etzioni is that individual rights and aspirations should be protected but that they should be inserted into a sense of the community …"

Still, as any native Southern Californian (like me) can tell you, importing millions of poorly educated Mexicans in recent decades has not improved the local sense of community.
There have been sizable numbers of people of Mexican descent living in the southwestern United States since at least the 1840s, but many East Coast intellectuals like Etzioni never paid much attention to them until recently. So, they feel free to make up fantasies about how future immigrants from Mexico will turn out with little reference to how the last half dozen generations have fared.
Like so many academics and pundits, Etzioni's sees Mexican immigrants through the lens of Ellis Island nostalgia, sentimentally slathered with ethnocentric self-absorption.
Etzioni's lack of interest in actual Mexicans leads to some howlers. The professor's thesis statement is:

"A large number of immigrants, many from Mexico and other South American countries (and to a lesser extent from Asia), are making the United States more communitarian than it has been in recent decades by fostering a stronger commitment to family, community, and nation …"
First, Mexico is not a South American country. There are no fewer than seven other countries between Mexico and South America. Mexicans don't even like to be called a Central American country. (You can't blame them. Would you?)

Second, people of Mexican descent in this country are remarkably lacking in the community orientation that Etzioni has made such a glittering career out of endorsing.

Etzioni cluelessly assumes that Mexican clannishness corresponds to a willingness to help the community at large, or even just the Mexican slice. In reality, as New York Times correspondent Alan Riding observed in his 1984 bestseller Distant Neighbors: A Portrait of the Mexicans: “Mexicans need few friends, because they have many relatives.” That's why, as columnist Gregory Rodriguez once wrote in the L.A. Times: “In Los Angeles, home to more Mexicans than any other city in the U.S., there is not one ethnic Mexican hospital, college, cemetery, or broad-based charity.”[Mexican Americans Are Building No Walls, February 29, 2004]

Harvard political scientist Robert D. Putnam conducted a survey of trust within 40 American communities in 2000 (which VDARE.com reported on in 2001). Then he decided to hunker down with his findings for five years because they were so politically incorrect: contra Etzioni, the more diversity the less "social trust, community attachment and sociability," with immigrants being worse for the communitarian virtues than African-Americans.

Swain has delivered a fine and fair anthology on a topic almost criminally neglected by academia. This is no doubt why it gas received no reviews that I can see and on Sunday evening the hardcover languished at 1,694,347 on Amazon.com. (The paperback was at 71,126). I urge VDARE.COM readers to rectify that.

"Spanish police on Thursday arrested a right-wing writer and publisher wanted in his home country of Austria for repeatedly denying the existence of the Jewish Holocaust and the use of gas chambers, officials said.

Gerd Honsik was arrested in the southern city of Malaga, a police spokeswoman said. No more details on his arrest were immediately available.

Honsik had fled to Spain after being convicted in 1992 in Austria of neo-Nazi activities and sentenced to 1 1/2 years in prison for writings that defended Adolf Hitler's Third Reich."

It won't be long before the mainstream media in America cheers as Americans who question the Holocausts canon are sent to prison. In fact, it's already happening.

Jay Solomon reports on controversy over a planned speech.The Chicago Council on Global Affairs has canceled a September speech on U.S.-Israel relations and Washington's pro-Israel lobby by two prominent U.S. political scientists.

John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt were scheduled to use the Sept. 27 address to outline their upcoming book, "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy," which is expected to be released by Farrar, Straus & Giroux early next month. But the president of the Chicago Council, Marshall Bouton, canceled the event under pressure from critics who were uncomfortable with the academics' arguments, according to a letter drafted by Mearsheimer and Walt to the Council's board.

These opponents of the event argued that the two political scientists could only address the Chicago Council if someone from the opposing side, "such as Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League, concurrently appeared on stage with the authors. "One might argue that our views are too controversial to be presented on their own," Mearsheimer and Walt wrote. "However, they are seen as controversial only because some of the groups and individuals that we criticized in our original article have misrepresented what we said."

Mearsheimer, a political scientist at the University of Chicago, and Walt, on the faculty at Harvard, set off a political firestorm last year when they penned an article for the London Review of Books, called the "Israel Lobby," that argued pro-Israel interest groups had distorted U.S. policies in the Middle East. They also argued that these groups played a central role in promoting the Bush administration's decision to invade Iraq.

Since the original article appeared in March 2006, the two academics have appeared at a number of ventures to explain their views, such as the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Press Club and Georgetown University. But a number of leading Jewish-American organizations, such as the ADF and the American Jewish Congress, have consistently charged that Mearsheimer's and Walt's views are anti-Semitic and overemphasize the power of the pro-Israel lobby. Mearsheimer and Walt deny being anti-Semites and said the charges are designed "to discourage respected organizations like the Council from giving us an audience."

Straight firemen - forced to be in a gay parade

A religious legal organization on Monday announced plans to sue the City of San Diego after firefighters there were allegedly forced to participate in the city's "Gay Pride" parade and subjected to "vile sexual taunts."

According to the Thomas More Law Center, four firefighters were forced to participate in the parade against their will and were "subjected to vile sexual taunts from homosexuals lining the parade route." The center has filed a request to sue the city - an administrative procedure - and expects to file a sexual harassment lawsuit in coming weeks.

"These firefighters dedicated their lives to save the lives of others," Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the law center, said in a statement. " They did not sign on to become unwilling props to a controversial political and social a genda."

According to the complaint filed with the city, the firemen of Engine 5 told their chief they did not want to appear in the parade but were told the morning of the parade that they were under orders to participate.

San Diego Fire Chief Tracy Jarman is an open lesbian who lives with her domestic partner. Jarman says the "gay pride" parade "is a fun event and all employees are encouraged to participate."

Lutheran Pastor Jailed in Germany for Opposing Abortion

Erlangen (Germany), June 26, 2007: A German court sentenced a 55-year old Lutheran pastor in jail on June 14 for opposing abortion (Volksverhetzung, which means incitement of the people).

Actually there's more to this story. The pastor was jailed for usng the word holocaust in a way Jews don't approve. Read on.

"Pastor Johannes Lerle was sentenced to prison for an year by Erlangen court in Germany for compared the killing of the unborn in contemporary Germany to the holocaust.

Without legalized abortion the number of German children would increase annually by at least 150,000, which is the number of legal abortions in birth dearth Germany. Pastor Johannes Lerle compared the killing of the unborn as the Jews were killed in Auschwitz during the Second World War.

On 14 June, the court in Erlangen ruled that, in doing so, the pastor had “incited the people” because his statement was a denial of the holocaust of the Jews in Nazi-Germany."

"Three years after Air America first came on the air, intended to be a leftist voice in the mostly conservative world of talk radio only to go bankrupt as ratings sank, it has been newly “relaunched” under former Democratic politician Mark Green on 64 stations (1600 AM, WWRL in New York).

Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine, the leading industry publication for talk radio, told the Cybercast News Service that Air America Radio is “heading in the right direction ... You have to look at Air America in context. Too many people have said, ‘Look, it’s liberal. It failed,’ as if that’s why. The fact that they’re liberal or progressive is irrelevant to me. It has to do with talent and a good business plan.”

But whether talk radio, be it left or right, is fair to Israel, is, in fact, very important to Harrison. For the past five years, Harrison and his publication have been shepherding more than 50 talk show hosts to Israel in conjunction with America’s Voices for Israel (AVI), a group founded and presided over by Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Harrison, a member of AVI’s board of directors, recently devoted an entire glossy front page of Talkers to these Israel trips. And on one trip, several weeks ago, conducted in conjunction with United Jewish Communities, among the radio personalities traveling with Harrison was Lionel, the uni-monikered host newly hired as Air America’s 9 a.m. mid-morning slot. ...."

JOHN Prescott, Labour’s buffoonish and unlamented ex-Deputy Prime Minister, had a unique talent for mangling the English language.

One of the many laughable statements from his time in office was a comment about protecting the environment. “The Green Belt is a great Labour achievement and we intend to build on it,” he said. Yet for all its comic element, this verbal slip may have revealed the Government’s true intentions.

Thanks to Labour’s policies, England is rapidly being turned into one of the most overcrowded places in Europe, full of soulless developments and urban sprawl. There barely seems to be a corner of the South-east that is not vulnerable to more housebuilding.

Our once green and pleasant land is increasingly covered in concrete and red-brick.

And the problem is about to become worse, if Gordon Brown has his way. He has just announced proposals to build an extra three million homes by 2020, while the annual total of new properties is to rise from 185,000 a year to more than 240,000. In addition, planning restrictions are to be removed to encourage more development.

Labour policies have driven an explosive demand for housing

These steps have been presented as necessary to ease our chronic housing shortage, particularly for young people trying to buy their first home. A major extension of the building programme, say ministers, will lower the pressure on an overheated market, thereby improving affordability.

But the crisis has been driven by a cocktail of naked greed from the developers, who have a vested interest in pushing up property prices, and woefully misguided Government policies that have helped to manufacture an explosive demand for housing.

And those problems are not going to be solved by Stalinist bullying of local authorities, the bulldozing of our rural landscape and yet more collusion with the avaricious house-building lobby.

The bastardised socialist agenda of the Government has played a central role in exacerbating the housing crisis in three key ways. The first has been the wilful destruction of our borders and the promotion of mass immigration on an unprecedented scale. It is little wonder that there is such pressure on the housing stock when our country is allowing 500,000 foreigners to settle here every year, most of them in the South-east of England.

No advanced society can accommodate this kind of influx without putting the physical infrastructure under unbearable strain. Even if the Government were to double the annual housebuilding plan, it would still not meet the needs of immigrants. Moreover, because many newcomers are out of work or impoverished, they severely increase the demand for social housing.

Second, while the middle and working classes are hammered by this Government, super-rich foreign tax exiles are given an easy ride. And the eagerness of these parasites to buy property in the South-east, often solely for investment purposes, keeps driving up prices to grotesque levels. Plutocrats and the jobless do well under Labour but ordinary people find themselves squeezed.

Third, the Government has stoked housing demand by advancing the breakdown of the traditional family unit. For a decade, ministers have been saying that marriage is an irrelevance in the modern age.

“Families come in all shapes and sizes,” goes one of the mantras of New Labour. But far from being neutral about the married family, Labour has discriminated against the institution through the tax and benefits system, handing out extra money to lone mothers, giving new rights to unmarried couples and making divorce far easier.

As a result, we have by far the highest rates of teenage pregnancy, family collapse, divorce and lone parenthood in Europe. And all this familial chaos, with couples separating and individuals living on their own, only adds to the pressure for more homes.

I have recent direct experience of the aggravation wrought by unceasing development. A few months ago my wife and I moved to a small 19th-century house in the village of Westgate on Sea on the Kent coast. We were attracted to the property because it was in a conservation area, at the end of a terrace in a quiet, leafy street.

But on the day that we moved in we received a letter from the local council informing us that our neighbours, who owned a large Victorian house with a substantial garden, had submitted a planning application to demolish their home and put up three large apartment blocks in its place.

On any rational grounds, such a proposal would be thrown out. It would not only mean the demolition of a fine piece of architectural heritage but it would also damage the environment.But I fear that under the guise of meeting local housing need, the plan will be approved.

Even if the council rejects it, the Government will probably force it through to meet housebuilding targets for the area.This is happening all over the south of England. The relentlessness of housing growth is unsustainable. I sometimes feel that we are living in a madhouse, paying welfare handouts to millions of able-bodied British citizens to do nothing, then importing millions of migrants to fill the jobs that the benefit claimants could easily do, then bleating about the lack of affordable housing because of the phenomenal population growth. We seem to be trapped in a vicious downward spiral. And the way to break free is not by pouring more concrete over the Green Belt but clamping down on mass immigration.

Brazil orders Berezovsky arrest

A Brazilian judge has ordered Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky to be arrested following money-laundering allegations linked to a Sao Paulo football club.

The judge also ordered the arrest of two of Mr Berezovsky's associates, including Kia Joorabchian whose MSI company has a major stake in the team.

Defence lawyers have denied any wrongdoing at the Corinthians club.

In November, the American electorate repudiated Bush's Iraq debacle and established Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate promising to bring this "flawed policy wrapped in illusion" to a decisive end. Bush vetoed their withdrawal timetable, but voters urged their leaders to hold the line and not be bullied. In the end, though, 37 Democratic senators capitulated and gratuitously gave the President his $100 billion no-strings- attached blank check . . . enough money to pay tuition and fees for 1.3 million college students for four solid years!

Deep disappointment set in. Cindy Sheehan, the liberal icon, was so demoralized she resigned and returned to private life. In June, a CNN poll reported that "respect for Congress" plummeted to the lowest level "ever recorded."

Bloggers called them "traitor Democrats", and the descriptor is apropos. At the time of the vote, sixty-two percent of the American people favored a time-table for a withdrawal, but, more significantly, "seventy percent" of Democrats were so inclined. Voting against this burgeoning tide of anger betrayed the will of the people and party that put these Democrats in office.

Curiously, all of the traitor democrats were huge career recipients of funds from the Israeli lobby. If we took ten Democratic apostates and compared them to ten Democrats who stood by the voters, pro-Israeli PAC contributions were "ten times" greater for the turncoats than those who stayed with their constituencies ($322,000 versus $34,000 on average).

To be specific: Carl Levin, outspoken critic of the war and, we thought, a loyal supporter of the new regime to end it, defected and blithely turned his back on his Michigan support base. Despite his strident anti-war rhetoric, the Grand Rapids Independent reports Levin has supported Bush all the way "consistently funding the war and not introducing any meaningful legislation to bring it closer to an end." Practically unknown to his constituents, Levin is one of the largest beneficiaries of Pro-Israeli PAC funds collecting $600,000 in career contributions according to the Washington Report on Mideast Affairs.

Barbara Boxer, Denis Kucinich, and Earl Blaumenauer, all opponents of the war, collectively got $73,000, but turncoat-democrats, Dan Durbin, Max Baucus, and Frank Lautenberg scooped up in excess of a million plus untold benes like travel funds. ....

A Brit who get's it right on immigration

As only the English can do - here is a very well articulated objection to immigration in England - in The Guardian no less! The writer is referring to a key issue in the upcoming Parlament elections. It is an issue which strengthens the BNP (British National Party) - a party which until this issue lit the fuse would have been compared to the NSDAP by any mainstream media organ.

I'm tired of the scaredy-cat (neo-)conservatives whose only objection to immigration is security or economic. Ancestry, tradition, culture, heritage, language, and race are vital.

"Immigration is a difficult and dangerous issue. Butthe low priority accorded to it by the opposition seems unhealthy for democracy. Millions believe their legitimate fears and resentment about a large population increase in a densely inhabited island are being brushed aside and debate on the issue stifled."

"No sensible person argues against admitting any outsiders to Britain. But there seems a vast difference between objecting on principle to immigration and being appalled by its current scale. "

"Implicit or explicit in the liberal view of immigration is a denial that the present inhabitants of a community have rights in determining on what terms, and in what numbers, new arrivals should be able to join. This seems a gross injustice, an assured formula for discord."
